That’s right, it’s been a long time coming, but MSW is finally moving to a new and much larger facility. Many of our closest customers have been aware that for several years we’ve been looking for a larger and more suitable facility for our race operations. Well, it is finally happening.
Morehead Speed Works was founded in late 2015 in a small two car garage, with just our own personal tools. We quickly outgrew that shop and in the summer of 2017 moved into a 4500 sqft commercial property on Riverchase Way in Lexington, SC, where we are still located to this day. While this move was a huge improvement in our ability to work on multiple race cars simultaneously, we quickly outgrew this shop as well. Almost immediately we began looking at options for larger and better suited facilities, spreading our search out over much of the Carolinas. We started to focus our search in the areas north of Charlotte, NC. Towns like Mooresville, Kannapolis, and Concord are all well known for their abundance of motorsports related businesses. Mooresville is often referred to as “Race City USA” due to dozens of NASCAR teams that call the area home.
We kept coming up empty on options, as there just wasn’t much available that would suit our needs. Then around late 2023 we found some acreage just outside of Kannapolis, NC, a piece of property located in a small commercial park that had the potential for building the shop of our dreams. The location would put us near the midpoint between Concord and Mooresville, just a fifteen minute drive to nearly all of the various motorsports related businesses in the area. This will drastically cut down on our turn-around time for specialty services from the numerous shops that we’ve built working relationships with over the years. Better yet, we will share our location with our engineering partner, SES Manufacturing. If you’ve purchased an MSW branded product, more than likely it was developed and machined by SES. Having their expertise and specialty CNC equipment under the same roof will be a massive increase in our ability to produce custom parts and products.

This upgrade to a new shop comes the big hurdle of moving a great deal of equipment, parts, tools, cars, and various other shop items. Unfortunately there just isn’t any easy way to accomplish this while still providing the same level of service for the numerous customers we have. To help alleviate some of this, we will be putting a temporary hold on any new in-shop customers until further notice. Once we have completed the move and are operating out of the new facility, we will resume normal operations and scheduling of work.
Can you tell us about the new shop?
The new shop is 20,000 sqft, of which 12,000 sqft will be dedicated to Morehead Speed Works. We will have clean rooms for engine/drivetrain and electrical work. Separate sealed & filtered rooms for fabrication, chassis prep, and parts cleaning. We will have an actual chassis dyno cell, with proper ventilation and noise abatement, allowing for tightly controlled environmental conditions. The entire facility will be environmentally controlled for comfortable working conditions year round. The facility will also have far more storage potential for the stocking of products, repair parts, and other useful items. A dedicated race simulator room will be available for our clients to get practice laps in as well.
When does the move take place?
The new building should reach completion around December ’25 / January ’26. We will try our best to not skip a beat in our support to our current customers, both in-shop and ecommerce orders. We will begin moving some equipment up to the new location over the next few months to ease the transition.
I’m local to your new shop, can I come by?
Not yet, the shop is still an active construction site. We will definitely have a public open house once we have settled in.
I’m interested in working at MSW in your new facility, are you hiring?
We will certainly be expanding our team at the new location. If you are a motorsports enthusiast with a strong mechanical aptitude, then we encourage you to submit a job application. You can find our application form here: MSW Careers. Please understand that we are some months away from occupying the new building, so we will likely not be making any immediate hires, but having your information on file is the first step.
Where exactly is the new shop located?
Once we have moved in, we’ll update the website to reflect our new address. For the time being, just know that it is located less than 5 miles from downtown Kannapolis and less than 8 miles from I-85.
