We really like the GP versions of the SmartyCam because they allow you to place the camera nearly anywhere, while still having easy access to the recording module. This is especially great for endurance racing where you may want to swap memory cards during a race. It’s also a great setup for formula cars, motorcycles, or other vehicles where the traditional SmartyCam would not work as well.
This new Revision 2.2 features a new higher quality coaxial video cable that eliminates electronic interference commonly found in racing environments.
Another new and powerful feature is the built in ECU bridge which allows for direct CAN to engine ECU connection (or other logging equipment, such as a MoTeC dash.)
The Revision 2.2 is also completely compatible with the GPS08 module, for complete standalone operation.
Unlike most “action cameras” the SmartyCam feature a Global Shutter CMOS sensor, eliminating the “wave” or “jello” effect so common to GoPros and other off the shelf cameras not designed for the racing environment.
Like all SmartyCams, the GP HD features realtime data overlays, which can be completely customized to suit your needs.
There are two camera lens Field of Views (FOV) to choose from, the 67 and 84 degree. We recommend the 84 for front facing cameras, so that the steering wheel and shifter action can be captured*. The 67 degree is good for rear view out the back glass. It can also be used as a front facing camera, but won’t capture your driver inputs.
*when using a typical main hoop or harness bar mounting location in a sedan/coupe race car.
